"Two of the three concerts thus far have been special concerts - Saturday's holiday concert and the season opening pops concert. The conductors of those concerts are placed at a disadvantage because they were not able to program the kind of large-scale symphonic works that are at the core of the orchestral literature. Those making this decision need to have a clear idea of how the next music director would handle those pieces as well as how they might program half a season."
Good point, and perhaps a converse - that conductors who did weighty first concerts should be required to show that they can do light music equally well.
