Record Year

Brendan I. Koerner of Slate magazine has posted an article trumpeting the recent announcement that sales of "classical" recordings increased more than any other genre in 2006. Mr. Koerner emphasizes the contribution of "crossover classical" recordings to this occurrence, and Alex Ross convincingly questions that conclusion.

The rumors of concert music's death remain exaggerated.

Yes; but I wonder what motivates the hand-wringers. There's a sort of plaintive, "If you would but have been guided by me" character to the various premature mourners at the alleged burial, which is a stagey sub-genre all its own.

    Cheers,

I would suggest we start a club, but I have no idea what to call it.

    Karl--

I know what you mean. There does seem to be an agenda behind a lot of the writing about the state of our art today. I don't know what it is (or they are, as the case may be).
