Charles T. Downey of ionarts has a round-up of the early reviews of Kaija Saariaho's Adriana Mater, which premiered Monday evening in Paris, after a four-day delay due to labor unrest. Alex Ross' take on the opera is still to come. EDIT: Here it is.
Marcus Maroney and Lisa Hirsch take on Bernard Holland of the New York Times, with examples and suggestions, while A. C. Douglas offers a defense-by-assertion of the critic.
I've added former Tallahasseean Tim Risher to the blogroll.
A.C. Douglas neither offered nor attempted a defense -- "by-assertion" or otherwise. He merely made a passing observation or two.

ACD, if only you'd enable commenting on your blog, we could conduct this discussion there, where it belongs. "Bernard Holland, perhaps the only music critic worthy of the name still writing for the Times" is certainly a defense of Holland against what I said, and an implicit criticism of the Times's other critics.
ReplyDeleteBoth you fine folks have blogs of your own, and that's where your argument with any remarks posted on my blog should be posted. Mr. Maroney has already done so, and I will deal with his posted remarks on my blog, linking his post, of course. That's the way things ought to be handled in the blogosphere. If either of you will argue that that cuts out those who don't have a blog, my answer is: Tough shit. Why should I subsidize anyone's arguments with a comments section on my blog. Let them start blogs of their own to voice those arguments, which can be done at no cost to them. If they're not willing to make that effort, then as far as I'm concerned their arguments and their opinions are not worth my attention.

And not so incidentally, I will not respond on my blog to any comments you've both made in this comments section. In order to get my response to those comments, post them on your respective blogs.
ReplyDeleteI'll wait a few hours before making my brief answer to Mr. Maroney's already posted remarks on his blog to give you both a chance to do so.

And further, please note that my initial comment in this comments section was repeated on my blog as an update to the post in question. I made that initial comment in this comments section merely as a "placeholder" until I could get to my blog to update that post.

Suffice it to say that having a discussion in three places instead of one is silly, and of course allows one to readily escape responses to specific issues or dialog. Responding on someone else's blog works for just about everyone but you, ACD, given that nearly everyone on my blogroll has commented on my blog at some point or another.
ReplyDeleteOh, make that "commented at my blog."
